This applies to: • all commercial use trailers that weigh over 750kg in gross weight • all non-commercial use trailers that weigh over 3,500kg in gross weight. These trailers only need to be registered if they are travelling through a country abroad that has signed up to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. To date, the Republic of Ireland, Malta, Spain and Cyprus have not yet signed up to this convention. Once a trailer has been registered with the DVLA, it will be allocated a unique registration number that must be displayed on the trailer.
