We start off by precisely laser cutting the Corten steel to ensure the exact sizes of our orders are consistent and meet customer requirements. We then apply folds to the sheet steel with specialist machinery and complete the fabrication by hand, which is done by the best, most qualified and professional fabricators in the country. What sets our Corten Steel Column Planter apart from competitive products is that each one has a double-folded return top lip feature. Similar products will leave a steel edge or a single fold. We make ours this way as it adds to the Corten steel’s strength and rigidity, providing a much higher quality finish, looks more aesthetically pleasing and is safer for your hands when planting. The edge detail shines with our column planters as the corners and connecting sides are fully seam welded with our fabricators taking the time to fully smooth the welds. The charm of this product is in the uniqueness it offers thanks to them all being handmade by professionals. What is it made of? As the name suggests, the column planter is made from Corten steel, also known as weathering steel. This type of steel is incredibly corrosion resistant (COR) and boasts high tensile strength (TEN). Corten steel undergoes a weathering process and develops a beautiful patina when exposed to moisture and the other elements. Our standard, structural grade 2mm thick steel forms an oxidised patina acts as a barrier that slows the oxidisation process, elongating the life of the material. The patina showcases distinct, autumnal colours of red, orange and brown over time, with each one developing unique patina colours depending on the climate and weather where the product is situated. Your Tatton Column Corten Steel Planter will be completely different to anyone else’s! Corten steel is widely used across the landscaping and construction industries with several famous landmarks across the world built from this premium metal. They include: The Angel of the North by Anthony Gormley John Deere World Headquarters by Eero Saarinen, Kevin Roche Leeds Broadcasting Tower by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios Interested in the difference between Corten steel and mild steel? Smaller sized orders will arrive via a parcel courier partner while larger ones via a pallet courier. You can rest assured that all deliveries are fully tracked, and we have lead times of 3 to 4 weeks. If you require a shorter lead time, get in touch with us to see if we can accommodate you. See our delivery policy for more details. How long will it take for the Corten Steel Column Planter to weather? Each Corten Steel Column Planters are available in a raw steel finish as standard, meaning the patina has not yet formed. You can order your planter pre-weathered if you like, meaning you won’t have to wait for the beautiful patina to form. If you choose the raw steel finish, no problem, the patina will develop over a period of 6 to 9 months. The speed of the weathering process will depend on certain factors including the weather, climate and where the planter is located, in proximity to the sea or coast. Does the planter just sit on the ground? To give our planters a floating effect, where they are slightly off the ground, they come with fixed 15mm feet that are hidden underneath the planter. This offers practicality for drainage and also looks creative and different from other planters. We can also make our planters bottomless so they can be installed directly on soil as a raised flower bed. Adjustable legs or casters can also be installed on the bottom allowing for more customisation. If you wish to discuss any of these options, get in touch with our sales team by emailing [email protected] or give us a call on 0121 824 5700. Can you use the Tatton Corten Steel Column Planters indoors? Our team can remove the drainage holes that come as standard for you to use the planter indoors. They look excellent in any indoor and outdoor environment. What about maintenance? You would think that some sort of maintenance is necessary for your garden planter. That’s what makes Corten steel different to other materials like plastic and wood – you won’t have to! Just fill it with your flowers or plants, plant it down and enjoy! Other things to note During the weathering process which develops the patina colouration, the ‘run off’ from rainwater and watering may stain the surface the planter is placed on. This is important to consider if placing near wooden furniture like decking. The ‘run off’ is most likely to occur during the first six months of the weathering process. If a specific finish is not specified, planters can be delivered at several phases of the weathering process, from fresh steel to full Corten. It’s possible that we have started the weathering process for you.
